On May the 8th, one of our favorite days of the year is celebrated; set aside to give appreciation and respect to some of our favorite people. Mothers Day will inspire billions of dollars in greeting card, candy and flower purchases – all to ensure that our mothers know just how special they are in our lives. Observed all over the globe, Mother’s Day is often recognized to be on the second Sunday in May just like here in America; but there are varying customs in other countries. Some, like India and Mexico, celebrate on May 10 annually, regardless of the day of the week. Bulgaria celebrates on the fixed date of March 8th to coincide with International Women’s Day; the UK celebrates on the 4th Sunday of Lent; and in Thailand, the day is celebrated on the queen’s birthday, currently August 12th.

Many flowers are popular in honoring our mothers. Pink roses, for instance, represent gratitude and thankfulness – and are often recognized as emblematic of the holiday (although white carnations once held that distinction). To design an arrangement that sends a heartfelt message, add lilies, which point to devotion and sacrificial love. Pinks and purples are selected most often for Mother’s Day arrangements; this Mother’s Day, consider sending a modern take on the floral arrangement instead of a traditional bouquet – your mom will love these contemporary designs.
